National Safety Council - Tamilnadu Chapter

Origin

The National Safety Council was set up on 4th March, 1966 by the Ministry of Labour, Government of India as a non-profit making, non-political voluntary organisation. The recommendation to set up the Council had been made by the President’s First Conference on “Industrial Safety” held in December 1965 and approved by the 24th session of the Labour Ministers Conference.

Objectives

The main objective of the Council is to generate, develop and sustain a voluntary movement at the national level to promote awareness of safety, health and environment, so as to supplement and strengthen Government efforts in the field.

Management

The Management of the Council is vested in a tripatriate Board of Governors which has 51 Members besides the Chairman. The Chairman is appointed by the Government of India in consultation with the Board. Sixteen Members of the Board of Governors representing the Central Organisation on Employers & Workers are appointed by the Government of India, while 32 members are elected from the General Body Members of the Council. The Director General is Chief Executive and Secretary to the Board.

Chapters

To provide the voluntary safety movement at the regional level, the Council has subsidiary Chapters in various States all over the country. These Chapters are constituted from among the members of the Council from the States. Presently the Council has 18 Chapters. Tamilnadu is one among the Chapters.

Tamilnadu Chapter

Tamilnadu Chapter is catering the need of additional services of Industries located in Tamilnadu and Union Territory of Pondicherry.

The chapter is enrolled with 700 Corporate Members, 350 Life and Individual Members and 3 Corporate Trade Union Members.

Managing Committee

The activities of the Chapter are governed by an Executive Committee comprising of 25 members. The members are elected from the corporate members, Life members and safety experts nominated by the committee.

Regional Subcommittee

To initiate action in the district level the chapter is having 5 Regional Subcommittee at the following places:-

  • Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Salem and Madurai.
  • These subcommittees are controlled by one of the Executive members in the respective area.

Activities of Chapter

  • Conducting Seminars, Workshops & Conferences.
  • Conducting Public Training Programmes.
  • Conducting In plant Training Programmes for the industries to suit their requirement.
  • Organizing State Level Safety Awards & Safety Competitions.
  • Maintenance of Library with reference books and periodicals.
  • Safety films & video library are kept for training the employees.
  • Safety audits / surveys/ studies are being conducted as per the request from industries.
  • Technical advice extended on special topics / queries from members.
  • Since 1971, every year, National Safety Day is celebrated on 4th March at different levels throughout the country to mark NSC’s Foundation Day.
  • Safety day articles mementos are made available to the member industries for issue to workers on National Safety Day.
  • Printing of Safety posters, Stickers, Guide Books etc for use by Member Industries.

Tamilnadu Chapter dedicated service to the Nation, with the continuing support of Central and State Governments, Industries and Trade Unions. The Council is poised and look forward to spearheading the voluntary and safety movement in the state to greater heights.
